This terracotta sculptural bust of an elderly woman figure is by the Norwegian-Danish sculptor Stephan Abel Sinding. Moving from Norway to Copenhagen in 1883, Sinding had his breakthrough in the same year, staying in the country for twenty years before finally settling in Paris. A great admirer of both classical and modern sculpture, Sinding found a style that combined the Symbolist style with realism. The present sculpture was crafted in 1892 while Sinding was still living in Copenhagen, and depicts an elderly peasant woman, with a draped head covering framing her solemn face.
The sculpture is signed and dated to the front left ‘Stephan Sinding / 1892’
