The painting, held by a fine carved giltwood frame, depicts a desert landscape. The centre ground is populated by the vanguard of a long, trailing caravan of camels and figures, the length of which diminishes into the hazy distance. To the right is a walled city of domes, minarets, and verdant trees, a point of contrast to the harsh, heat-blanched environment of the caravan’s route, with dry cracked desert beneath and hot pale blue sky above. The picture is expressively painted, the painterly manner employing loose brushstrokes and a washed palette. The painting is indistinctly signed lower right. The work is a superb example of turn of the century Orientalism.
