Empire period painted and gilt porcelain coffee service

This beautiful porcelain coffee service is comprised of twelve cups and saucers, a coffee pot, a milk jug, and a sugar jar.

The porcelain throughout is superbly wrought and finished: the set of 27 pieces, manufactured during the Empire period of the early 19^th Century, is crafted in the distinctive, classicising Empire style—as evidenced by the stubbed, scrolled handles of the sugar jar, for instance. The luxurious cobalt-blue ground porcelain is extensively parcel gilt, the gilding chased and tooled on occasion. Moreover, the porcelain is painted with figurative scenes: each piece features a gilt-framed Italianate landscape, the manner of which recalls Renaissance era images of the pastoral.

The coffee pot and sugar jar are topped by similarly decorated porcelain lids.
