This beautiful porcelain coffee service is comprised of twelve cups and saucers, a coffee pot, a milk jug, and a sugar jar.
The porcelain throughout is superbly wrought and finished: the set of 27 pieces, manufactured during the Empire period of the early 19th Century, is crafted in the distinctive, classicising Empire style—as evidenced by the stubbed, scrolled handles of the sugar jar, for instance. The luxurious cobalt-blue ground porcelain is extensively parcel gilt, the gilding chased and tooled on occasion. Moreover, the porcelain is painted with figurative scenes: each piece features a gilt-framed Italianate landscape, the manner of which recalls Renaissance era images of the pastoral.
The coffee pot and sugar jar are topped by similarly decorated porcelain lids.
