Description

This stunning set by Barwise & Sons dating back to the 19th Century, is a rare pairing of a gilt bronze and marble clock and barometer - a combination seldom seen, even more so when exhibiting such a level of quality and craftsmanship.

Each piece of this duo embodies the lyrical beauty of a lyre through its shape, enshrined in a white marble case that enhances the sophistication of the ensemble. The pieces captivate the observer with their starburst tops, a radiant highlight above the swagged leaf work decoration that adds a natural, detailed charm. Encompassed by very opulent shimmering diamantine bezels are the enchanting enamel dials, each an epitome of exquisite artistry. They feature the clock and barometer’s functions inscribed and reveal the technical quality of these pieces’ engineering. The dials are set against a background of gilt starbust decoration, mimicking the one at the top, further giving the set an air of joyous opulence.

The oval bases of the pieces are decorated with further gilt foliage decorations all around, with an intricately-designed floral frieze in gilt adorning the lower section. The bases rest on four wide toupie feet.

The barometer dial bears the proud inscription 'Exd by / Barwise / 46 St James St / London SW', serving as a testament to the set's illustrious origins. Barwise, a renowned watchmaking dynasty, was founded by John Barwise in London, in 1780. By the 1820s, the business was the source of high-end watches and clocks for the British establishment, the name’s legacy surviving until 1988.

Distinctly superior in quality than the typical standard for similar pieces, this set is not only a reflection of impeccable quality but also a unique representation of English craftsmanship. The clock and barometer set, with its combined aesthetic appeal and functional prowess, is an unparalleled addition to any collection, making it an exceedingly rare and highly sought-after set.
