Fine and large woven wool Kashan carpet

This beautiful large Persian carpet features a structure typical of Kashan prayer rugs, a central panel flanked by a large floral border, featuring an architectural triple arch of Islamic-style design supported by two sets of coupled columns. Unlike most similar carpets, however, in this rug, a column from each of the two sets is partially invisible behind the border frame.

The carpet’s central panel shows elaborate designs. The area between the two sets of columns features an oriental chandelier on the top and a large vase of sculptural flowers on the bottom. Both of those large motifs also feature coupled birds who adorn them symmetrically. On the sides of the columns, imposing cypress motifs stand upright giving the carpet a directional aspect typical of prayer rugs. The cypress designs are topped by further decorations -- a crown of small flowers, complex palmette motifs, a beautiful bird about to take flight, and, lastly, a classical boteh design. All these elements contribute to giving the tableau a remarkably opulent look and are woven in varying shades of beige, yellow, pale blue, and navy against a bright red colour.

The border of this oriental rug is rich in floral design, intricately woven on a background of cerulean so that the many small flowers’ beautiful colours, shades of pink, carmine, and blue, stand out.

This large rug was handwoven in the early 20th Century, using the finest spun wool, and quality dyes.
