This magnificent side chair is crafted from ormolu mounted mahogany in the Empire style. The chair features front legs wrought from ormolu and modelled as winged sphinxes—a decorative form popular in Empire style art and design—with each leg terminating in a paw foot. The backrest of the chair features a mahogany frame flanked by twin ormolu foliate columns, and the mahogany surfaces of the backrest are mounted with classicising ormolu motifs, including profile busts, winged goddesses, and stylised vases, while the centre of the backrest features ormolu crossed arrows centred with an Apollo mask within a laurel wreath.
