Description

This fine silver Menorah or Hanukkah lamp is by the German silversmith Rotger Herfurth, who lived from 1722 to 1776. The Menorah features a silver backplate decorated with a moulded candelabrum set within a crowned cartouche, which is flanked by two stylised lions. The oil lights are set below beneath a hinged cover, and the Menorah features a removable light, or Shamash, to the side.

The piece is marked to the body, backplate, and cover for Herfurth.

A very similar Menorah of the same size and by the same maker is in the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Art, USA, on view in the Judaica Gallery.
