Crafted in the 20th century by very skilled craftsmen, this large flower model celebrates the centuries-old tradition of Chinese hardstone carving.
The piece is made up of several polychrome flower models. Hardstones such as rose quartz, jade, agate, and nephrite are carved to depict opium poppies, a very important flower within Chinese history. The prominent stigmas are carved from a green hardstone, most likely turquoise, its vivid colouration beautifully complementing the yellow and red beads surrounding it. Most of the flowers are in full bloom, however some are in their bud states creating a varied nature-inspired composition.
All flowers are attached to metal, thread-covered branches which terminate with a bunch of deep green jade leaves. The darker hues of the leaves and branches enhance the bold hues of the flowers.
The floral arrangement is placed within a cloisonné enamel planter. Among the dark blue ground are floral and foliate motifs rendered in pastel hues such as yellow and pink. Further cloisonné enamel decoration decorates the top of the planter. The base as well as the lip are gilt, the gold shine adding an elegant touch to the model.
Of a charming design and filled with Chinese history, this flower model would be a superb home décor addition.
