By Asprey (English, Founded 1781)
Of an impressive size and depicting a majestic cheetah perching under a masterful nephrite tree, the lamp showcases Asprey craftsmen’s finest work.
Made by Asprey around 1980, this magnificent lamp is made from numerous luxurious materials. All are expertly worked to create a charming animal scene where natural features predominate.
This sculptural lamp depicts a majestic cheetah perching under a large tree. The treetop, acting as the lampshade, is masterfully carved into a dome shape from nephrite. The semi-precious stone is naturally adorned with black spackles and lines, further emphasizing the depiction and realistic feel of a tree. The opaque properties of the material are especially visible when the light is switched on, the light accentuating nephrite’s intricate detailing visible on the surface. The gilt metal rim adds an elegant touch and ensures the dome creates a cohesive design with the base.
Made from gilt metal, the lamp stem is cast in the form of a tree trunk, numerous interestingly formed branches extending towards the top. Fine detail such as the tree bark texture, further adds to the realistic feel of the piece. In front of the tree, proudly sits a cheetah. Its face is turned towards the observer, its diamond eyes and nose shimmering in the light.
The lamp stands on a gilt metal stepped circular base topped by a nephrite slab, giving the appearance of grass on which the animal rests and the tree grows.
Asprey is a famous British firm of goldsmiths, silversmiths and jewellers who produce pieces for European royalty in addition to elite clientele.
Demonstrating the superb skills of 20th century English craftsmen, this stunning lamp would make a superb addition to a modern as well as traditional interior space.
