This mantel clock was crafted in France in the late 19th Century. The clock is designed in the Rococo manner in that it is highly ornamental and dynamic in form, with an abundance of scrollwork and floral motifs. The clock case is elaborately detailed, finished with diaper patterns on the stem and base, and heavily decorated with foliage. Note the beautiful and accurate depiction of the flowers that frame the clock face. The way in which floral motifs are depicted reveals the craftsman's great skill in creating a sense of movement and delicacy in bronze.
The clock face is composed of a circular enamel dial, with both hour (in Roman numerals) and minutes (in numbers) inscribed on the face. The clock hands have been intricately cast in bronze, with care made to distinguish between the hour and minute hand.
This clock is an exquisite piece of craftsmanship, being both bold and beautiful in its form. It would make a wonderful addition to any mantelpiece.
