Description

This fine porcelain plaque is painted with an interior scene in the Orientalist manner. The picture depicts three figures—two of whom are Arabic, while the young woman is European. The men engage each other in conversation while surrounded by a copious variety of objects that remove all doubt as to the Middle Eastern or North African location of the unfolding scene: there is a Moorish side table, a huqqah, and a variety of copper bowls and pots. The work is painted in a fluid, fine manner.

The plaque, which is contained within a giltwood frame, is signed indistinctly lower right and marked to the reverse with a spurious KPM stamp.
