This large porcelain vase features an ovoid body with a tapered base, which is set on a shaped stem with a splayed foot. The vase’s stem is painted a turquoise colour, which blends with the orangey-red of the foot. They are finely parcel gilt with stylised foliate motifs. The vase’s body is beautifully decorated with detailed paintings of yellow, white and red roses, and green foliage. The colours bleed into one another and combine with the light blue background. The paintings are signed by the artist, ‘F. Nagel’. The vase’s neck and shaped cover are painted a vibrant red and are finely decorated with gilt cartouches, drapery swags, foliate motifs and bands. The lid is crowned by a gilt leafy bud finial.
The foot of the vase bears the marks of the Royal Bonn factory. Royal Bonn was established in 1836 by the potter Franz Anton Mehlem. The company produced high-quality porcelain and earthenware in the 19th Century, which was popular with the European artistocracy.
