This impressive centre table is crafted in the Empire style, pairing a refined geometric design with impressive neoclassical-style decorative elements.
The table features a rectangular malachite tabletop, the unadorned nature of which allows the incredible formations of the malachite stone shine. The tabletop sits above a recessed malachite apron, which is adorned with an ormolu frieze of palmette motifs. The top is supported by two malachite square-profile structural supports, which are applied with further ormolu decoration, including a torch design.
The top is also supported by four gilt-bronze caryatids, which are sculpted with impressive lifelikeness. The supports sit atop an H-form malachite stretcher. The stretcher is centred by a twin-handled volute krater, also cast in ormolu. This vase is particularly finely decorated, with foliate designs around the base, masks on the handles, and a frieze of dancing figures surrounding the main body. Flanking the krater on either side are a pair of gilt-bronze sphinxes.
The colour contrast between the deep green malachite and metallic ormolu is particularly splendid on this table, making it an eye-catching piece for the appropriate interior space.
