The painting portrays a group of figures in Orientalist garb seated by a tree: an elder rests with his back against the bark, his entourage of younger men surrounding him, while a female figure serves water from a terracotta amphora. In the right middle ground is the encampment, with horses grazing nearby. Herdsmen form a procession in the distance, the horse-mounted figures returning the camp with their livestock. The setting is highly unusual: one would expect to see a desert scene, but instead the painting is set within an idyllic pastureland, a place lifted from the steppes. The colour palette is bright and vibrant, with verdant greens and burnt yellows predominating.
The painting is indistinctly signed lower right and is held within a giltwood frame.
