Description

This spectacular pair of oil on canvas paintings depicting floral still life scenes was painted in the 19th century, its composition inspired by the style of Old Masters, in particular the Baroque period.

Both paintings are similar in composition and employ the same colour palette. The colours are vibrant, an unusual feature in paintings of this type.

In both artworks, a central marigold vase is the base for a huge floral composition made up of a selection of flowers. Tulips and peonies amongst others are superbly rendered in shades of red, blue, pink, white, yellow, and orange. Dark green foliage is dispersed between the abundant flower bouquet, adding an intriguing element to the oil paintings.

The second painting includes another vase overflowing with flowers on the architectural features, creating a painting wealthy with superb floral arrangements.

When placed next to each other, the compositions in both paintings are almost mirror reflections of one another. The left side of the first painting is filled with C-form architectural features while a similar design is present on the right side of the second painting. Rich, dark green trees are depicted in the background, creating a suitable canvas on which the vibrant floral compositions are shining bright.  A pastel blue sky with cream and white-coloured clouds is seen behind the main subjects, its position on both paintings again creating an illusion of the two pieces joining together, only divided by the gold-coloured frame.

The Old Master style refers to pieces created by European artists between the Renaissance and 1800. The paintings in Mayfair Gallery’s collection are in particular inspired by the works from the Baroque period. These were characterised by symmetrical, opulent, vibrant compositions, with vivid contrasts, all of which can be observed in this magnificent pair of oil paintings.

The giltwood frames are of an unusual shape with skilfully carved elegant detailing.

Vibrantly and richly coloured, and skilfully painted, this pair of still life paintings would make a magnificent addition to the appropriate interior space.
