This very impressive pair of hardstone flower models was expertly crafted in 20th century China.
The two flower models are of an identical design, each one showcasing the same flower type. The large, hanging leaves are carved from deep green jade, whereas the delicate array of flowers is from a lighter-toned jade. The two differing shades beautifully complement each other. The stigma of each flower is crafted from three delicate hardstone beads, the vibrant red superbly popping out against the lighter petals. Surrounding each flower are dark green hardstone sepals.
Wires wrapped in thread are crafted to depict the central stem as well as branches on which the flowers hang. The brown colouration of the thread, paired with the incredibly detailed petals and flower models, make this pair a work of trompe l ’oeil whereby the observer is tricked into believing that these are real plants.
The two flower models stand inside magnificent cloisonné enamel planters. Three thin gold bands decorate the pots, and in between each band is an array of very detailed decorations. The deep blue enamel ground is used for the background, whereas shades of pink, red, and green are employed for the flower composition. A black bird can be spotted among the floral design.
Supporting the models and planters are carved wood plinths, their elegant and refined design matching the rich colouration and patterning of the pieces above.
