These superb flower models showcase the expert skill of 20th century Chinese craftsmen. The models pair a variety of stunning hardstones with cloisonné enamel.
The two models are almost identical in design, save for the colours of the fruits which hang from the tree. Each tree is centred by a metal trunk, which has been expertly treated with resin to resemble the natural patinations of the bark. The twisting arms of the tree extend into thread-wrapped metal stems, from which nephrite leaves hang. The leaves are beautifully variegated, and have been etched to resemble the veining of their real-life counterparts.
Alongside the leaves hang numerous bulbous fruits, which resemble pomegranates in various degrees of ripeness: some are green (jade), some are pink (rose quartz), and some are red (agate). These three gemstones symbolise strength and purity, unconditional love, and balance and harmony respectively, imbuing the sculptures with a wealth of spiritual significance. Alongside this, in Chinese culture pomegranates symbolise plentifulness, and offer blessings for many children.
The trees are housed within circular cloisonné enamel planters, the interiors of which are filled with small stones to further the realism of these pieces. With bright gold bands bordering the top and base, both the upper, waved rim and main body of the planters are covered with stunning turquoise ground, upon which polychrome swirling designs are added. On the front and reverse of each planter are scenic panels, which each depict cranes set within lush, foliate landscapes. The crane is a symbol of longevity within Chinese culture, imbuing this pair with further symbolic meaning.
Sporting highly intricate designs on both the main body and the planters, these superb objects would suit both contemporary and traditional interiors.
