Crafted by Asprey in the late 20th century, this incredible piece combines beautifully contrasting materials to create a highly expressive model of an eagle.
This sculpture depicts an eagle taking off from a rocky crag. With its delicate vermeil face pinched in concentration and its wings lifted majestically in flight, it appears that the subject is engaged in hunting for prey, and even on a smaller-scale the imposing nature of this animal is apparent. The main body of the bird is carved out of pure quartz with pyrite inclusions. The blend of these two materials – one smooth and one jagged – creates the impression of a ruffled exterior of a bird in flight, and draws the attention to the distinctive nature of the eagle’s stance; unusually animated for objects of this kind.
Whilst pyrite itself is thought to have special protective properties, the combination of pyrite and clear quartz is also thought to be one of the most desirable and beautiful pairings of compounds within the gem kingdom. The symbolism of this crystal might for this reason be seen as reflecting the majestic nature of the animal which it depicts, as well as making this object highly desirable.
Delicately balanced atop the crystals are the vermeil head, wings, and talons of the bird, which beautifully catch and reflect the light. This vibrant gold contrasts superbly with the shimmering pyrite and brightness of the quartz, and highlights the large number of precious materials making up this stunning piece.
The interior of each of the silver-gilt wings on this eagle is marked ‘925’, as well as displaying the Swiss hallmark of Asprey.
