Meiji period gold and silver inlaid Komai iron plaque
£5,500
This beautiful plaque demonstrates the damascening technique that distinguishes Komai style design, with a spare, abstracted landscape realised in filaments of silver and gold.
This refined plaque is a superb example of Komai style design. The plaque is crafted from iron, the surface of which is darkly patinated. An image of Mount Fuji and disconnected elements from an abstracted landscape, such as fields, rolling hills, and a farmstead, are realised with finely inlaid silver and gold. Komai style design uses the techniques of damascening, whereby one metal is inlaid into another. The work, which is contained within a wooden frame, is a superb demonstration of Meiji period Japanese art.
