Meissen porcelain antique plaque of The Penitent Magdalene
By Meissen Porcelain Manufactory (German, founded 1710)
£28,000
This magnificent antique porcelain plaque depicts Mary Magdalene in a moment of quiet stillness, her pale skin beautiful against the royal blue surrounding robe.
This fine, expertly painted, and unusually large porcelain plaque is set in a highly ornate stucco and giltwood frame. The plaque depicts an evening scene, wherein Mary Magdalene lies prone on a bed in a blue robe reading. The mode of execution is sombre, with a dark background and lightly illuminated foreground giving rise to chiaroscuro. Â The plaque is painted after the treatment of the same subject by the highly celebrated Renaissance artist Correggio (Italian, 1489-1534).
The plaque is marked with the crossed swords of the Meissen manufactory.
