Description

This imposing clock, standing almost 1 metre tall, is modelled with a scrolling form typical of the French Rococo style, also known as Louis XV style.

The clock is set with a large central circular dial inset with enamel cartouches with Roman numerals for the hours. The outer ring is numbered with Arabic numerals for the minutes and the dial is finely engraved and centred on a sunburst mask of Louis XV. The dial is protected behind a glazed door on a hinge, which can be opened to allow for winding adjustments. The dial and clock movement are inset into the elaborately detailed case with scroll details applied with conforming asymmetrical decorations associated with the Louis XV and Rococo styles, such as acanthus leaves, shells, love arrows, foliate features and surmounted by a figure of a putto seated in the clouds. The sides and lower section of the case are inset with pierced metal mesh, in order to enhance the acoustics of the striking sounds of the clock.
