This elegant Neo-Grec style clock set comprises an elaborate clock with two flanking three-light candelabra.
The clock combines an alabaster body with silvered bronze and gilt bronze applied elements, and the contrast between the pale mineral and shining metallics is highly pleasing. The central dial is flanked by a band of silvered bronze leaves, interspersed by budding ormolu acorns. Above the dial is a Greek key border, which encircles the alabaster. An elaborate Greek kylix surmounts the clock, itself topped by a sweet cherub finial, who wears a grapevine crown in an evocation of the god Bacchus.
The alabaster body has a flared base, the front of which is decorated with three applied effigies of female masks. Each side of the base features a grotesque, which sits above a decorated shield. The entire clock stands upon four paw feet – two at each end.
The two flanking candelabra are almost identical in design. Each has a superbly cast amphora-shaped body, supported by a tripod of angular supports. The body is applied with further oval portrait masks that mirror the design of the central clock. From the baluster stem extends three candle arms with circular drip trays and sconces, which further supports extending from the cartouches surrounding the effigies. As on the clock, each candelabra is surmounted by a playful putto, whilst the compositions stand on three hoof feet. The candelabra again pair silvered and gilded bronze in a refined blend.
The unusual design of this clock set makes it a highly desirable item for any collectors of 19th century antiques.
