Description

The oil on board painting is attributed to the British artist John Calcott Horsley. The work depicts a scene with the characters Anne Page and Master Slender from William Shakespeare's play The Merry Wives of Windsor. The figures stand outdoors in period dress, with buildings behind them defining the background. The painterly style is fluid and accomplished in the typical Victorian manner, and the colour palette is subdued yet varied. It is set within a carved giltwood frame.
