Description

Sculpted with great skill and expressivity from a single piece of marble, this wonderful small sculpture depicts a young boy, or a cherub or putto, clutching a bunch of grapes as he attempts to hold them away from a large bird that has accosted him. The bird, some sort of crow yet with a head closer to a parrot, has landed at his feet, and caws up at the young child, who shrinks away from it and holds the fruit in his hands out of reach. The bird's wings, the locks of the child's hair, and the expression on his young face, are all rendered with great skill and detail, and the playful scene is brough wonderfully to life in the sculptor's hands.

The piece is placed upon a fine marble plinth, and is signed 'D'Angelis' towards the base.
