Ormolu and cloisonné enamel antique rectangular mantel clock
£4,500
The decoration of this French mantel clock takes inspiration from Japanese design, with its depictions of exotic birds amongst beautifully rendered foliage.
This wonderful mantel clock is crafted from ormolu and cloisonné enamel in the beautiful Japonisme style. The clock features an ormolu architectural frame, with a plinth below and an entablature above, separated by uprights to each corner edge. The four side faces of the clock, as well as the top, are adorned with panels of turquoise ground enamel adorned with cloisonné depictions of exotic birds and butterflies amidst distinctly eastern foliage. The front face, which is set behind a glazed door, features a circular gilt dial inscribed with Roman numeral hour indices. The dial is signed 'Ve J. MAGNIN GUEDIN & Co'.
