This wonderful clock set is crafted from ormolu adorned with elaborate champlevé enamel work in a highly eclectic and charming nineteenth-century style.
This fine three-piece clock set is crafted from ormolu and champlevé enamel in an eclectic late nineteenth-century style. The set is comprised of a central mantel clock and a pair of flanking candelabra, all designed and decorated in a conforming manner.
The mantel clock features a plinth-form base supporting a pyramidal central section surrounded by four columns—the two front columns being modelled as caryatids. The central pyramidal structure supports the cylindrical clock drum, which is set into an entablature surmounted by a putto finial and four flaming urns. The ormolu body of the clock is profusely adorned with champlevé enamel work, wrought into a variety of scrolling forms and executed in tones of blue.
The candelabra are similarly formed, each with a plinth-form base adorned with champlevé enamel and flanked by twin dragons. The base of each supports a square-profile column, which issues three light branches: two C-scroll branches and one central one. The column and candleholders are adorned with beautiful enamel work.
The clock is signed ‘Janetti / Padre e Figli’ to the dial, indicating that it was retailed by the celebrated Italian retailer.
