Description

This pair of elegant fireplaces was crafted in France in the late 19th century.

Each one is carved from white statuary marble and is mounted with ormolu decoration. The main frame of the fireplace is of a refined design. The central cartouche is mounted with an ormolu rosette flanked by a pair of Empire-style mythical beasts. The edges of the fireplaces are adorned with square and rectangular acanthus leaf plaques.

Both cast iron insets are centred by a medallion in which a courting couple is depicted. The male plays for the lady whose gaze is focused on the musician. Surrounding them are several nature-inspired motifs, for example, above are two laurel leaf garlands. The central panel is framed by further ribbon-tied garlands and rosettes.

It is very difficult to find a matching pair of identical fireplaces, therefore this set is a very desirable addition to the appropriate interior setting.
