Crafted in China during the 20th century, this exquisite pair of flower models comprise a variety of hardstones.
Almost identical in design, the models consist of two trees set within rectangular jade planters. Carving jade is a historic Chinese craft, and the feelings of purity and strength associated with the hardstone add symbolic meaning to this pair. The metal trunk and stems are wrapped with dark-coloured thread to evoke the natural textures and shades.
Each tree is dominated by large hardstone leaves of a variegated pale brown colour, which have been expertly carved and etched to create a trompe l’oeil effect (whereby the viewer is deceived into believing the models to be real). Peeking between the leaves are a host of hardstone blossoms, in shades of lilac, orange, red, and green. The petals are centred by delicate beaded stigmas, which are threaded through the wire that holds the floral compositions together. The beads are of a vibrant yellow or red colour that superbly contrasts with the surrounding petals.
The compositions are seated upon tiered four-footed plinths made from ebonised wood. The plinths are carved with elegant openwork foliate designs.
Combining an intricate and life-like design with multiple precious stones, these charming models would be sure to bring the beauty of the outside world into the home.
