These black lacquer low tables are expertly adorned with brass and gilded decoration as well as topped by Chinese porcelain hot water dishes.
The 18th century white porcelain hot water dishes are adorned with a selection of nature-inspired motifs rendered in shades of red, orange, purple, and green. Each one features a decorative border as well as a central floral composition. A pair of openings are included on two sides of the pieces which allow the user to fill the piece with water and later drain it out. Hot water dishes were traditionally used to help retain the heat of the food placed on top.
The porcelain pieces are placed in the centre of two 19th century Chinese lacquered low tables. Engraved brass mounts are attached to the edges and tops of the tables. The brass decoration extends towards the central hot water dishes, leading the observer’s eye towards them. A selection of sinuous gilt motifs is included all around, the shapes superbly complementing the design on the porcelain pieces.
The pair comes with a very impressive provenance, previously being in the collection of the Duke & Duchess of Windsor as well as Susie Hilfiger.
Of an interesting design and function, these antiques would be a superb addition to the collection of anyone interested in Chinese decorative arts.
