Description

This pair of Derby porcelain figures portrays a shepherd and a shepherdess. The shepherd stands proudly with a dog by his side, while the shepherdess cradles a lamb. The pair is brightly coloured, with vibrant pastel hues predominating. Each is a fine example of so-called ‘Bocage' figures, bocage being the term for a wooded landscape and, in decorative art, for a figure who stands in a naturalistically rendered setting. Each stands on a base adorned with turquoise and gilt scrolled forms.

One figure is incised to the underside with ‘No. 60/3’ and an indistinct signature, while both feature the number 13 in iron-red pigment.
