This fine pair of French vases is crafted from opaline glass. Each vase, of traditional form, is raised atop a circular foot and a waisted stem, the ovoid body of each culminating in a narrow neck and a flared rim. The white ground opaline glass is parcel gilt throughout: gilt bands encompass the foot and rim, and delicate geometrical motifs adorn the bottom of the body and the top of the neck. Most strikingly, each vase is painted to the front with a portrait set within a gilt cartouche. Each portrait, delicately executed, depicts a young woman with an animal: one with a pup, the other with a kid. The reverse of the body of each vase is decorated with an elaborate gilt emblem.
