Description

This extraordinary pair of large, Regency-style wood rectangular mirrors, exudes both grandeur and elegance. Crafted in the late 19th century, these mirrors blend the sophistication of English design with the exotic allure of the neoclassical Egyptian aesthetic.

Each mirror displays a remarkable contrast of rich, dark mahogany and lighter wood tones, resulting in a striking visual appeal. The top border of each mirror is adorned with a masterfully hand-carved acanthus-leaf band, demonstrating a classic element of Regency style. The prominent contrast of the lighter acanthus leaf against the dark wood brings forth a sense of depth and texture that accentuates the fine craftsmanship.

Centrally positioned, parallel seated griffins surround a cartouche, their mythical forms delicately hewn from the contrasting wood. At the heart of the cartouche, a beautifully carved olive tree stands - a symbol of peace and victory. This central motif offers a direct nod to the ancient origins of the neoclassical style, while simultaneously highlighting the quality and precision of the carving work. The sides of the top panel feature concise rosettes.

To the sides, Egyptian stiff-leaf columns stand. These iconic elements of Egyptian architecture, rendered with great attention to detail, add a restraint touch of exotic and pay homage to the Regency era's fascination with Egyptian motifs. The bottom border features a harmoniously crafted leaf wreath with a sunflower motif at the centre. The wreath delicately softens the architectural strength of the design, creating an attractive balance.

These mirrors exemplify the restrained elegance that is quintessential of the Regency style. Unlike the ornate, often gilded opulence of French decorative arts, the Regency style offers a refined sophistication that relies on proportion, symmetry and the careful use of Classical architectural protocols.

The craftsmanship and attention to detail in these mirrors are a testament to the expertise of the artisans of the time, whose skillful hands brought to life these spectacular pieces. Their stunning craftsmanship and neoclassical Egyptian design make them an extraordinary addition to any refined and cultured home or collection.
