This extraordinary pair of candelabra are replete with foliate decorative elements in an extravagant Rococo style, exploring the stunning capabilities of expert silverware moulding.
Both candelabra are set upon circular bases, which stand on four openwork grapevine feet. The bases are applied on opposing sides with wheat sheaves, separated by curved cartouches. The main shafts are applied with incredible sculptural decoration: one features a putto clasping a wheat sheaf, which he ties together with a ribbon. On the other stands a putto who clutches a blanket to his chest as he warms himself beside a fire, with the scene set underneath bowed branches. The two sculptural forms are expertly crafted with lively dispositions, the former calmly tying his crop together whilst the latter comically frowns in the cold – as such they make a wonderful contrasting pair.
The stems extend into two alternating tiers of lights, with the upper section of the shaft moulded in an impressive tree trunk design. The foliate-capped branches are wrapped with vines, and culminate in bell-shaped capitals with geometric engraving. The candelabra are surmounted by a flower-cluster finial.
The candelabra are marked ‘CHRISTOFLE’ on the base, as well as with various workshop stamps and the inventory number ‘1385327’. Continuing to design superb pieces for the luxury market today, Christofle was founded in 1830 by Charles Christofle, and is known for having introduced electrolytic gilding and silver plating to France in the mid-19th century. This pair are a particularly exceptional example of the decorative capabilities of the firm.
This stunning pair exemplify the very best of 19th century silverware design, and would make a fantastic and eye-catching addition to an interior space.
