This exquisite pair of Sitzendorf figural groups are filled with character, deftly moulded from porcelain with vibrant painted details.
Both sculptures depict a figure sitting atop a beautiful white horse that is rendered with impressive anatomical correctness. One group depicts a male rider, the other a female who is riding side-saddle as was appropriate for the time. Both riders engage with an accompanying figure: a woman with a flower basket looks up to the male rider, whilst an attendant retrieves his horn from underneath the horse of the female rider. The faces of each of the figures are expertly painted, even on a small scale.
Each figure is dressed in typical 18th century European fashions, rendered in bright shades of red, green, yellow, and crimson. The floral-patterned skirts of the two female figures are particularly fine quality, with their intricacy emphasising the skill of the maker. All figures, aside from the woman with the flower basket, wear a so-called ‘tricorne’ hat, whilst the woman wears an orange bow in her hair.
The two groups stand on top of a floral-encrusted oval base that mimics the brown roots of a tree. From the centre protrudes an expertly moulded tree stump, which acts to support the horse and rider. Each base features engraved gilt decoration on the outer rim, adding a touch of luxury to these attractive pieces.
The figures are marked with blue Sitzendorf ‘S’ marks on the reverse. Dating back to the late 18th century, the Sitzendorf Porcelain Manufactory is known for creating high-quality figures of delicate beauty like this pair from the Mayfair Gallery collection; items which have become prized by collectors worldwide.
With a host of thoughtful details, this pair of equestrian groups would make a pleasing addition to any interior space.
