By Dubost, Antoine (French, 1769-1825)
This fine pair of Baroque style paintings hints at the art of the Flemish master Rubens, especially in the grand musculature of the reclining youths and the dark colour palette.
The paintings in this pair are by the French artist Antoine Dubost. The paintings are similar in theme and composition: in both, a classically nude boy lounges with a playful dog. One painting depicts a Rubensian youth, whose advanced musculature hints at a divine or semi-divine status. The boy points languidly at a dog, which sits upright on its hind quarters. In the background, a baby sleeps, wrapped in blankets. The other painting portrays a young boy wrapped in a blue drape with his arm around a poodle. Both paintings are finely painted, which chiaroscuro effects realised by the use of raking light. The colour palettes are sombre and complementary: red predominates in one picture, while blue accents abound in the other.
One painting is signed 'A DUBOST FECIT, LONDON, 1811', and there is an inscription on the dog's collar which reads 'CATALANI'. The other painting is signed 'DUBOST, LONDON, 1809'. Both paintings are set in carved giltwood frames.
