Pair of patinated bronze models of dogs by Moigniez
By Moigniez, Jules (French, 1835-1894)
£5,500
The bronze dogs in this pair by the French animalier sculptor Jules Moigniez are deftly cast and each dog is finished with a warm and remarkably varied patina.
This pair of patinated bronze dogs is by Jules Moigniez, one of the most celebrated and collected sculptors of animals (or animalier) active during the nineteenth century. Each sculpture portrays a hunting dog—some form of spaniel or retriever—standing in an animated, taut stance. Moignez has deftly rendered the form and texture of the dogs’ bodies, using subtle patination to accent particular features. The dogs stand atop integral naturalistic oval bases.
