Description

The pedestals in this pair are crafted in a wonderfully eclectic style, incorporating elements of the Neoclassical, the Rococo, and the Renaissance, using a wide variety of fine materials, including green onyx, ormolu, porcelain, and champlevé enamel.

Each pedestal stands on a splayed square variegated red marble base, the base set on slim ormolu feet and edged above with an ormolu egg-and-dart moulded band. Each column features a rectangular panelled shaft, the bottoms and necks of which are decorated with multicoloured champlevé enamel designs, ormolu husk trails, and painted porcelain plaques. These porcelain paintings depict young lovers, courting in outdoor settings, a theme typical to Rococo art. The pedestal shafts are crafted from green onyx and are mounted with champlevé enamel finial-shaped motifs, centred on ormolu rosettes. The pedestals are surmounted by flared red marble tops and square green onyx plateaus.

The ormolu mounts are stamped several times ‘Gabrol / GB’.
