This pair of wall lights demonstrates the best of the Régence style, which incorporates the massive forms of the Baroque with the elegant lines of the Rococo.
This superb pair of ormolu wall lights is crafted in the Régence style: that moment in the French decorative arts lying between the Baroque of Louis XIV and the Rococo of Louis XV. Consequently, the pair evinces qualities of both the Baroque and the Rococo: although not particularly large, the wall lights are materially massive, with large backplates and exuberant detailing; meanwhile, flowing lines and foliage abound, which hint at the Rococo.
Each light features a wide backplate modelled as a shield, though the form is reminiscent of the rocaille of the Rococo. This backplate is topped by a superb crest of curled acanthus leaves flanked by feathery foliate sprays. The lower section of the backplate includes a classical mask and further detailing about the motif of the acanthus leaf.
Each wall light supports the springing of three light branches, each scrolled branch adorned with yet more foliage and terminating in a single candleholder above a wide drip pan.
The quality of the bronze casting is exceptionally fine, and the gilding equally impressive.
