This wonderful pair of porcelain dogs is crafted by Samson et Cie, the renowned French manufactory of ceramics. The firm specialised in the production of very high-quality copies of porcelain pieces made by renowned manufactories such as Meissen.
In a seated position, the design of each model portrays the plush and voluminous texture of fur found on Bolognese Hounds. Mostly white, each canine model features brown markings painted on to imitate the texture of fur. The artists at Samson ensured details such as claws and whiskers were also skilfully painted on the white porcelain. Their eyes are depicted wide open as if fixated on whatever is in front of them. The two designs complement each other.
The design is inspired by one created in 1769 by Johann Joachim Kändler (German, 1706-1775) for the Meissen manufactory. This proved to be a very desirable model and continued to be produced for the next few centuries.
The reverse of each figure is painted with the Samson Meissen mark which is used on pieces inspired by those produced by the German porcelain manufactory. Â
Very well crafted and of a sweet design, this pair is a desirable addition to the collection of anyone with a love for dogs.
