Description

This fine patinated bronze sculpture is by Barbedienne, one of the leading fondeurs—or bronze craftsmen—of the 19th Century. The sculpture depicts the Roman goddess Diana—or, in the Greek pantheon, Artemis. Diana is identifiable by the helmet situated next to her feet. She stands in contrapposto, her figure revealed by a light, wrinkled chemise, her right arm raised above her head as if to shield her eyes from the sun.

The base is signed ‘F. Barbedienne. Fondeur’ and bears the reduction stamp for Collas.
