Expertly woven in Qum, a city in Iran, this eye-catching rug is decorated with a plethora of floral motifs.
The rug’s central rectangular panel is filled with a large circular design. Coloured in tones orange, cream and maroon, the shape is made from a selection of repeated geometrical shapes forming what appears to be a large flower. Surrounding it is a sea of various flowers and foliage scattered across the red background. The cream-coloured scrolling foliage adds an interesting and elegant feature. The panel is bordered by a slender frame filled with further nature-inspired motifs. The same design is used for the outer frame.
A larger frame surrounds the main design. Placed on a dark background, the polychrome design complements other parts of the piece.
Traditionally not considered a centre of carpet production, the rugs woven in Qum in the last century rival the pieces created in more traditional centres of rug production. Their quality is exceptional, and with the high knot count the rugs depict a wonderful selection of attention-grabbing motifs, as can be seen in the piece in Mayfair Gallery’s collection.
Of a vivid design, the rug can be hung on one’s wall or laid on the ground superbly adorning the space it is presented in.
