Description

The four pictures in this set are worked in silk satin stitch, with bead embellishments, on a painted moiré silk ground. The images are bordered with pressed gilt paper edges, within giltwood frames that are carved with elaborate 18th-Century Rococo motifs.

Each picture portrays a major event of Esther’s life. According to the eponymous Biblical Book of Esther, Esther was the Jewish queen of the 5th Century BC king of Persia, Ahasuerus. Esther is remembered for joining forces with Mordecai to save the Jewish people of Persia from the machinations of Haman. Silk-embroidered inscriptions on the images’ bottom borders identify them as the ‘Couronnement D’Esther’ (Coronation of Esther), the ‘Evanouissement D’Esther’ (the fainting of Esther), the ‘Triomphe De Mardochee’ (Triumph of Mordechai), ‘Aman Aux Genoux D’Esther’ (Haman at the knees of Esther).
