Set of ten silver-plate coffee cups and saucers by Habis
By Habis (Lebanese, founded 1940s)
£950
This elegant set of ten silver-plate cups and saucers is by the Lebanese silversmithing firm Habis, the first such firm founded in the country after its independence.
This fine set of coffee cups and saucers is by the Lebanese silversmith firm Habis, which was the first silversmith to be founded in Lebanon, based in Beirut, after the country’s independence in 1943. The firm was established at the request of the country’s first president, Bechara El Khoury. Initially, Habis produced sterling silver only, but by the 1960s the firm had diversified into producing goods in silver-plate. The present set is a fine example of the firm’s work.
Each cylindrical cup is engraved with concentric bands and is mounted with an ornate rope-twist handle. The saucer of each is adorned around its edge with a frieze of anthemia.
