Silver tea and coffee matching set with tray, 19th Century
By Garrard & Co. (English, founded 1735)
£22,000
This beautiful tea and coffee set, made from solid silver, is both decorative and practical, and would make a stunning addition to a traditional interior.
This fine tea and coffee service has been made by several different silversmiths over the course of several years, in a similar style for each piece to be matching. It comprises a tray, a hot water kettle, a teapot, a coffee pot, a milk jug and a sugar bowl with tongs. Each piece is decorated with matching engraved floral design. The kettle, teapot and coffee pot all have covers topped with a flower, and insulators on their handles, required for safe handling when the contents are hot. The cartouche to the front of each piece is blank, with the exception of the kettle, which contains an engraved coat of arms with Latin script centred by a deer.
Each piece is fully hallmarked- the tray with London marks for R & S Garrard of Panton Street and dating to 1863. The hot water kettle is marked for the Sheffield maker Samuel Roberts & Joseph Slater, with the date for 1850. The other pieces are from various makers and dates including one from Dublin, dated to 1861.
