This beautiful circular faience plaque is decorated with a view of Lake Lucerne bordered by a wonderfully elaborate and vibrant geometry of flowers and leaves.
This circular faience plaque takes the form of a charger, though the piece is set within an ebonised wood frame. The plaque is superbly decorated: at the centre, a roundel is finely painted with a bright and vibrant view of a lakeside chateau, with Lake Lucerne and the Alps behind. This central roundel is encompassed by a highly elaborate geometrical border, the manner of which recalls Islamic decoration. Profuse flowers, sprays, and splayed leaves are intricately arranged into a wonderful pattern, the bright blues, greens, and reds of which accent the central painted scene.
The reverse of the plaque is signed ‘Thoune’, indicating the area of Switzerland where the piece was produced. Thoune was an important centre of ceramic production in the 19th Century, and the present piece demonstrates the skill Swiss artisans could achieve.
