This vibrant woolen prayer rug was crafted by very skilled Turkish carpet weavers in the 20th century. Its design is typical of the Kirsehir city located in central Turkey. Kirsehir rugs are known for their bold hues, floral designs, and high quality finish, all features displayed in this fine example from Mayfair Gallery’s collection.
The central prayer niche (mihrab) is filled with several rows of village houses among trees. These are rendered in shades of yellow, red, blue, and cream, the more vibrant hues superbly standing out against the deep red background. Framing this composition is a double polychrome carnations border, a typical motif found on Kirsehir rugs. Other borders include geometric designs on a deep blue background as well as a mustard yellow strip filled with delicate blue and red dots. The two top corners of the central panel are filled with a pair of flower-like motifs.
The wide, outer border is coloured using a similar colour palette with shades of orange, green, red, blue, and cream predominating. The repetitive geometrical design includes floral shapes and adds interest to the overall composition.
The two shorter ends of the rug are finished with cream-coloured tassels.
Of a very detailed design and high-quality finish, this pictorial prayer rug would be a superb addition to one’s collection.
