These fine watercolours are by the Victorian artist H. S. Lynton. The paintings, each of an extended landscape format, are executed almost in monochrome, which hints at the blanched colouration of the environment they portray: the Egyptian desert. One painting depicts the ruins of an ancient temple against a backdrop of low peaks as a caravan approaches; the other depicts another temple in ruin, with figures in the foreground. The colour palette is blanched, with umbers and earthy tones predominating, even in the flushed colouration of the sky.
Each of the paintings is signed 'H.S. Lynton' to the lower left. One of the paintings is dated '(18)99' and the other is dated '1900'. Both are housed in wooden frames.
