Very fine and large pair of Italian pietra dura marquetry panels
£25,000
Exemplifying the mature nineteenth century Florentine pietra dura style, these beautiful panels feature exquisite floral designs inlaid in black marble.
Crafted in Italy in the nineteenth century, these very fine antique panels consist of ovals of black marble inlaid pietra dura designs of floral bouquets and subsequently set within ornate carved giltwood frames.
Pietra dura, literally meaning 'hard rock,' refers to the inlay technique of assembling delicately cut, highly-polished fine stones into a larger design with such precision that the boundary between each piece is virtually invisible, and the surface has a perfectly smooth, unblemished finish.
This technique originated in Rome in the 16th century and began most keenly associated with the city of Florence, where the use of it reached its pinnacle in the nineteenth century. Here it has been masterfully employed to create a pair of near-symmetrical floral designs, which have been inlaid into black marble discs and mounted in lavishly ornate giltwood frames.
