Cold painted bronze lamp of a cobbler's house by Bergman
By Bergman, Franz Xaver (Austrian, 1861-1936)
£12,000
This wonderful cold-painted bronze lamp takes the form of a medieval house, complete with a minstrel singing standing outside and the cobbler working within.
This charming lamp is crafted from bronze to imitate a narrow medieval three-storey townhouse. The house is painted with yellow walls, green window frames, and red roof tiles. The cobbler’s shop sign, of an old boot within an oval frame, hangs from the side of his building.
A minstrel stands on the cobbled street to the right of the house while singing and playing his mandolin. The large oak doors of the building can be opened to reveal the cobbler mending shoes at his bench.
The left-hand wall of the upper storey can also be opened to access the electric light bulb contained within. The windows of the house have been fitted with green and red glazing, so that, when the lamp is turned on, a warm, atmospheric light is emitted.
Bergman's monogram is stamped onto the lamp, along with an inventory number.
