Attributed to Chaumont, G.H. (French, 1790-1868)
£45,000
This surtout de table is exceptional for the variety of semi-precious stones it contains, the specimens including beautiful examples of lapis lazuli, porphyry, and jasper.
This surtout de table was produced during the Restauration period. It is of elongated rectangular form with semi-circular ends. The piece is encompassed by a pierced ormolu (gilt bronze) gallery formed as a miniature column-supported arcade and occasionally ornamented with palmette motifs. The central panels, of which there are five, fit together and are all inlaid with square semi-precious stone specimens displayed in a checkerboard pattern, the specimens including lapis lazuli, serpentine, porphyry, jasper, and orbicular diorite, among others.
